Chemical substance detection

ROHS directive

What is RoHS?

RoHS is the abbreviation of "The Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment" (the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment), a mandatory directive established by EU legislation. The purpose of the standard is to eliminate specific harmful substances in electrical and electronic products, making them more beneficial to human health and protecting the environment.

On June 4, 2015, the European Union issued a revised directive (EU) 2015/863, which revised the ROH directive 2011/65/EU, and listed the four phthalates of DEHP, DBP, BBP, and DIBP as restricted use Substances are controlled, and the restricted substances in ROHS2.0 are increased to 10. From July 22, 2019, all electrical and electronic equipment except medical equipment and monitoring equipment must meet the new requirements of ROHS2.0.

RoHS product range:

Electrical and electronic products and their raw materials (including: large household appliances, small household appliances, information technology and communication equipment, consumer equipment, lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, toys, leisure and sports equipment, medical equipment, monitoring equipment, automatic sales Cargo equipment, other electrical and electronic equipment).

RoHS limit requirements:

Homogeneous material

Content limit

Material application

Lead (Pb)

<1000 mg/kg

Lead is commonly used in solders in the electrical and electronic industries, lead-acid batteries, electronic components, cable jackets and cathode ray tube glass.

Mercury (Hg)

<1000 mg/kg

Mercury is a metal widely used in the production of electrical and electronic equipment, mainly in batteries, switches and thermostats, and fluorescent lamps.

Cadmium (Cd)

<100 mg/kg

Cadmium is used in electronic equipment, car batteries and pigments.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI)

<1000 mg/kg

Although some forms of chromium are non-toxic, hexavalent chromium can produce toxic effects.

Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)

<1000 mg/kg

Flame retardant in electronics and electrical appliances. They are found in indoor dust and air through plastic evaporation.

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)

<1000 mg/kg

Flame retardant in electronics and electrical appliances. The burning of printed circuit boards releases toxic substances.

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)

<1000 mg/kg

It is an excellent plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride copolymers.

Benzyl phthalate (BBP)

<1000 mg/kg

Mainly used as a plasticizer. When used as the main plasticizer, it is often combined with other plasticizers for plastic floors, decorative materials, corrugated boards, PVC plastics, etc. that contain a large amount of fillers.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)

<1000 mg/kg

It is a commonly used plasticizer for plastics, synthetic rubber, and artificial leather.

Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

<1000 mg/kg

Used as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose, cellulose ether, polyacrylate, etc., and as a gelling aid when combined with other plasticizers. It is widely used in plastics, paints, adhesives, explosive materials and nail polish.

What is RoHS uniform material/test point:

Homogeneous material refers to the smallest unit that can not be split by physical and mechanical methods, see the figure below for details. RoHS certification testing items and regulations require the content of each homogeneous material, so the number of homogeneous materials (the number of test points) directly affects the testing workload and test price of RoHS.
